I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself; my name is Mrs. Lisa Pearce, I am the School Counselor at Niagara Charter School.
Some people think that School Counselors only work with children who need help. The truth is that we work with all students to provide academic support, develop personal/social skills and explore careers. In elementary schools there is usually only one counselor; therefore, to be effective, it is critical that we consult and collaborate with the administration, the staff, parents and local community organizations.
I work with all children through classroom guidance lessons. I address specific needs through individual counseling and small counseling groups. I promote P.R.I.D.E., leadership development, good character and life skills. Students can meet with me individually or in small groups if they have been referred to me. How do they get referred? A student can ask to see me, a staff member or administrator can refer a student to me, and a parent/guardian can refer their child to me. Topics for small groups include: newcomers, students with self-esteem, friendship, grief due to loss of any kind, coping with divorce, study skills, goal setting, anger management and social skills.
If your family is experiencing anything out of the ordinary, please let me know. If I am aware of special problems your child may be facing, I can talk to your child and help both your child and you with the difficulties that might surface.
One of my functions is to be of help to parents. If you have any concerns about your child, I welcome the opportunity to meet with you to discuss the matter. It is important to remember that when school personnel and parents work together, it is a winning combination for children.
